Sniff and Tell

        More Letters From Paradise

            Sniff and Tell

The first animal domesticated by early man was the dog. And dog has been man's best friend ever since. But there were some tough times for dogs. Forced to fight huge bears, or others of their kind; pulling carts loaded with everything in the world, and  there was snow. And then, horrors, served by the Plains Indians and Chinese, as an entree. But the situation has improved.

Just sniff this: Some dogs here in Honolulu, are being trained to detect E. coliform for early dection of urinary tract infection. (All who have ever had this, please raise your hands). Other studies found that dogs could detect low blood sugar in diabetics, and the presence of cancer cells.

All or most of this information comes from a recent (Honolulu-Star Advertiser 8/26/13) story by Dennis Oda, "A Dog's Nose."
So as I conclude this most interesting information we should all remember how forever we have been smelling dog urine, now we can say "Here, sniff this."
