Self Discipline and Local Girl

       More Letters From Paradise

            Self Discipline

"A bologna sandwich loses some of its appeal while eaten in a restroom," he thought as he took a bite , and absently noted the number of cigarette butts in the urinals. "Self Discipline," school principal Wickersham, had called it. Students would be on their honor not to smoke in the restrooms. Everyone else called it "horse shit." And there was wild betting as to how long this would last.
It lasted two days. The air in the restrooms was its usual blue, and Wickersham's face was a nice shade of red. Miss Peckham, who taught office practice, won the pool which consisted of $25.00.
His eyes roamed over the walls, noting the butt marks and graffitti. He read "Wickersham is a asshole." Reaching in his pocket for his eraser, he calmly erased the letter "a", and wrote "an." Just then the bell rang, and he left his duty assignment and headed off to his class. Satisfied, he had done his best to keep students free from the evils of smoking.

               Local Girl

"I had never seen snow before," she said. But neither had any of her fellow employees of the Mexican Restaurant where she worked. She had been born on the Island of Moloka'i, the least developed of the Hawaiian Islands. The closest she had come to snow were the Christmas card and window displays in December. Her eyes sparkled as she recalled her first encounter with the white stuff. "It happened at Lake Tahoe,California," she said, skipping over any part of her story which would have explained how she left the island. "I did know that it would be cold, so I went around the stores and bought what I needed for the trip."  "Long sleeved shirts, pants", "You don't wear two pairs of pants, do you?" "Then gloves, sweater, jacket, scarf, and a wool hat."
"The snow was beautiful, and cold to the touch. I made a snowman, and then  realized my rubber slippers were all wrong.I had forgotten to buy a pair of boots!" She laughed, showing all her teeth in a big smile. "I guess I am just a local girl."
